Mr. Brooks

A psychological thriller about a man who is sometimes controlled by his murder-and-mayhem-loving alter ego.
Amazing performances by Kevin Costner and Demi Moore who play Mr. Earl Brooks and Detective Tracy Atwood respectively.
Mr. Brooks is definitely a flawed film with many plotholes but it has a solid cast and an amazing story and therefore ends up being a very clever thriller, one that deserves credit.
The final scene is to to die for and I would even buy the DVD just to rewatch that scene again and again. Once more, Kevin Costner proved that his performance in Dances With Wolves was not a fluke.
Come to think of it, Kevin Costner and Demi Moore barely shared any screen time together, and I guess this movie was shot very much like Meg Ryan and Tom Hank's "Sleepless in Seattle" where they only had 2 minutes of screentime together.
Very nicely done.

Becoming Jane
Sorry for the 8 month hiatus but now I'm back after receiving a wake-up call.
I'll "reopen" this blog with a review of a movie which i was "lucky" enough to catch on my flight. Becoming Jane.

Well, we're talking about Jane Austen of course. I must be honest, I have never managed to complete a Jane Austen novel. The closest one i got to completing was Pride and Prejudice. Therefore, I am reviewing this movie as a person who has tried reading her novels but do not have much idea on her style of writing as I've never read any of her endings.
This movie tells the tale of a pre-fame Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) and particularly, her romance with a young Irishman, Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy). In reality, this romance was very much speculated as there were no facts.
I have never been a fan of Anne Hathaway. I had always thought the range of roles that she could play was limited. The fact that she tried to get rid of her "Disney/Teenage movies" image by doing more than just nudity in Havoc made me like her even less. Now, has this movie changed what i think about her?
I honestly think certain accents were wrong. For example, i felt that James McAvoy was speaking with a Scottish accent rather than an Irish one. Anne Hathaway nailed hers though. However, the thing that really annoyed me is that this is more of a romantic fiction than a biopicture. And it is NOT ROMANTIC. I didn't feel any love, any sensual intimacy, nothing but plain desire for sex (No, there was no sex). This movie soon turned into a snoozefest which all of the passengers on my plane were actually happy since we were on a red-eye flight, thus explaining why I was "lucky".
There were memorable lines from the film though. Such as:
Jane Austen: If I marry, I want it to be out of affection. Like my mother.
Mrs. Austen: AND I have to dig up my own bloody potatoes!
......
Mrs. Austen: Affection is desirable. Money is absolutely indispensable!
At the end of this movie, I would say, it was a bore and they shouldn't have made the end such a Hollywood ending. And no, my thoughts of Anne Hathaway have still not changed.

Flags Of Our Fathers

Another one of those war movies? Another Saving Private Ryan?
No. This new film directed by Clint Eastwood is no ordinary war movie. It blends sensitive human drama while portraying an important historical and culture event.
Flags Of Our Fathers revolves around the story of the three of the six surviving marines, John Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford) and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach) who raised the American flag during the war to take Iwo Jima. They were photographed and this particular photo was used by the American government to sell war bonds. These three surviving marines were taken out of battle and flown back to the States in order to promote the War Bond Tour as they were now known as the "Heroes of Iwo Jima".
Now, did i mention 2nd American flag? These three men did not believe they were heroes, even though the American public did. They knew the real truth behind the infamous photo. I don't recall the last time a war movie moved me the way this one did. Certain scenes made me feel like I was getting a a real glimpse at the lives of the men who served during World War II. The actors played their part perfectly, making you understand they were representing real men in war, ready to fight and being afraid to die at the same time. Underrated Ryan Phillippe shined again in his role. I am looking forward to see more of his movies.
Clint Eastwood successfully presents an honest portrait of war, the beauty of brotherhood, the horror of literally walking through death and the struggle for survival. I can't wait for the 2nd part of the film told from the Japanese point of view, Letters From Iwo Jima.

Trainspotting

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday night. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
Awesome.
